On December 10, 2009, he was awarded the Hippocrates Prize for Biomedical Research by the Unamsi Board of Directors and on December 7, 2016, the “Ambrogino d'oro” Certificate of Civic Merit by the Mayor of Milan. Since 2018, he has been a member of the Scientific Committee of the anti-smoking project NoSmokingBeHappy of the Umberto Veronesi Foundation. What is COPD? Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (Bronchitis) (COPD) is a common, preventable, and treatable disease characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation. The chronic airflow limitation characteristic of COPD is caused in part by changes in the small airways (obstructive bronchiolitis) and in part by parenchymal destruction (emphysema); the most common respiratory symptoms include dyspnea, cough, and/or sputum production. These symptoms may be underestimated by the patient. COPD is a major public health problem: it is a major cause of chronic morbidity and mortality worldwide and is currently the fourth leading cause of death worldwide (6% of all deaths).
