In today's video, Prof. Nicola Dardes talks to us about pulmonary emphysema. As soon as we talk about pulmonary emphysema, the complications begin... Many patients are convinced they have pulmonary emphysema and in reality they don't. And just as many patients don't know they have it and only realize it when the disease is already advanced. Pulmonary emphysema is one of the variants of obstructive airway disease. But it has some particular characteristics... In the video, Prof. Dardes explains both the "textbook" definition of this disease (the one that many doctors give to patients and for them it is incomprehensible), and in a simplified way what it is. Returning to the starting point, we answer the question: "Why do people who don't have emphysema think they have it and vice versa?" The diagnosis of pulmonary emphysema is very difficult and for a long time it was "outsourced" to radiology. So in many cases the disease was not diagnosed correctly. Having said that, let's see how the diagnosis of pulmonary emphysema is made. The diagnosis of emphysema is made when the individual is in these circumstances: thin (often malnourished) heavy smoker has shortness of breath that progressively worsens The diagnosis is made with a chest CT scan and respiratory function tests. Among the most important factors to take into account is tobacco smoke (not just cigarettes, but also cigars and pipes). Smoking itself (as we have already seen in the video dedicated to smoker's cough, which you can find here == • Smoker's cough or Bronc... ) causes oxidative stress, which is what causes damage to the elastic structure of the lung. Now we don't want to "spoil" the content of this video too much (we have already done so in part :) we recommend that you watch it to the end to find out what the treatments and therapies are for pulmonary emphysema.
