A 10-year-old wooden house collapsed in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. Why did this building collapse? To find out, we dismantled and inspected the building to confirm its design and construction. *The conclusion was that it was designed and constructed in accordance with the Building Standards Act. However, the building still collapsed, making it clear that the minimum standards of the Building Standards Act are "to protect lives, but not to allow people to continue living in it." *We would like to thank Miyagi of Ecoworks, with whom we previously collaborated, for their help!
