Pulmonary Emphysema Pulmonologist and internist, Professor Nicola Dardes specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases. He is currently the Head of the Pulmonology Service at Paideia International Hospital in Rome and Scientific Director of CD Servizi Medici. During the interview, Professor Nicola Dardes explains what pulmonary emphysema is, how to recognize its symptoms and how to treat it. Included in the list of so-called chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), pulmonary emphysema is a chronic and usually bilateral disease that affects both lungs. It is estimated that it affects approximately 210 million people worldwide and can cause the death of 3 million individuals each year. Its prevalence increases with age and its epidemiology also varies according to the geographical region, with a higher incidence in industrialized countries than in developing countries.
