About :

We already knew the port of Belize from our last visit 4 years ago with the "Aida Luna" and knew that today they would be tendering. And you are a good distance off the coast because the water is very shallow and does not offer the big ships enough water under the keel. This is also the reason why the "Mein Schiff 6" boats were not used for tendering, but rather speedboats from shore take the guests to the mainland. The crossing takes a good 20 minutes. At this point a little tip for passengers who want to explore Belize on their own. Guests on an excursion with the shipping company have priority when tendering. This was not a big problem when we called; besides the "Mein Schiff 6" there was only one other ship in the anchorage waiting to bring its guests ashore. This meant that guests who wanted to disembark without an excursion could also get ashore without having to wait long. Four years ago there were a total of 4 ships off Belize and the shore tender boats are limited. There were sometimes very long waiting times. Even we, with a booked trip to "Altun Ha", waited a good hour for our tender boat. So it was best to get up a little earlier to catch a tender boat in time. Not an issue for us that day, because we had opted for the afternoon trip "Sharks, rays and stay on Cay Caulker". Once we arrived at the harbor, we went straight on to the next, much smaller speedboat. And the upcoming 45-minute trip across the open sea is actually not for people with back problems. The small boat hit the waves quite hard a few times, which of course also resulted in a shower or two, lots of laughter and a good atmosphere. After we had picked up the snorkeling equipment on "Cay Caulker" on the way to our rendezvous with sharks and rays, we went to a sandbank in the open sea. The excursion boats can be seen from afar, gathering at the place where the animals have been fed for years. This is of course very touristy, but it also guarantees that there is something to see on the trip. And even if the animals have learned to come to the site every day for feeding and are good-natured towards people, they are still wild animals on the open sea that we should get into the water with straight away. So put on your snorkel mask and get into the water. In fact, the water here is no deeper than 1-1.5 meters at most and you can stand without any problems. But that is not necessarily recommended, because there are already numerous rays swimming around you that swim under you or past you. Touching them is not impossible, but it is not a problem. The sharks, on the other hand, tend not to come close to people, but stay a little further away or directly at the feeding place. And even if you know that this is a tourist spectacle, that doesn't make it any less impressive to see and experience these animals so close in their natural environment. It was a very intense and impressive experience, not comparable to an aquarium. After the food had been brought out and the number of animals had gradually decreased, we continued on to a nearby reef where we had the opportunity to go on a short snorkeling tour with a guide. I didn't really need that, but well, snorkeling in the open sea isn't something you do every day. After our excursion boat had picked up all the participants from the water, we went back to "Cay Caulker". A small coral island that is now mainly geared towards tourism. The village has a good 1300 inhabitants and invites you to stroll through the sandy streets. We didn't find a really nice beach here. It's more like beach cafe after beach bar and so on. Overall, the stay in the colorful Cay Caulker Village rounded off the trip before we set off back to the tender port in Belize towards the sunset with lots of rum punch and loud music. A final highlight was the tender back to the "Mein Schiff 6". In the meantime, the sun had set and it is quite an impressive sight to see such a brightly lit ocean giant on the open sea as you slowly approach it. Here is the video of the trip, because pictures say more than 1000 words 😊.
