Cardiac Catheterization and Coronary Stents Cardiac Stent and Balloon Angioplasty Cardiac stents are small metal coils that are wrapped around a balloon catheter before being inserted into the coronary artery. After the coronary artery is dilated with a balloon, the stent is left in place to compress the artery wall and keep it in place after the angioplasty, improving blood flow in the artery. Over time, the lining of the artery grows over the surface of the stent, making the stent a permanent part of the artery.
