In this episode of Poetry & Truth, Silke Hohmann talks to sociologist Andreas Reckwitz about his work and his new book "Loss." Reckwitz, one of the most important initiators of social-analytical debates, explains why loss is not just an individual phenomenon, but also a profound social one. In the conversation, Reckwitz explains his path from his earlier works on creativity and singularization to the current topic of "loss." He argues that experiences of loss represent a fundamental problem of modern society, as they contradict the progress-oriented way of thinking of modernity. According to Reckwitz, modern societies often tend to suppress losses, while populist movements deliberately capitalize on these experiences. Modernity, according to Reckwitz, has not developed an adequate script for dealing with losses, which leads to the repression and privatization of experiences of loss. Whoever guesses whether Andreas Reckwitz's personal anecdote at the end of the episode is true or made up has the chance to win one of three copies of his new book "Ververlust".
