The German War Cemetery Ysselsteyn. The “German War Cemetery Ysselsteyn” has been located in the town of Ysselsteyn near Venray since 1945. To be precise: on the Timmermannsweg in the “Paardekop” forest area. The cemetery was established by the Dutch government in 1946 and is considered the largest military cemetery in the Netherlands and also the largest German War Cemetery in the world. Just past the entrance and in front of the impressive cemetery is the visitors center, completed in 2020. Here you will find information about matters relating to the cemetery, the war dead and their life stories. To the left of the stately brown beech avenue is a sarcophagus. It is a memorial in memory of the fallen from the First World War. Thirteen soldiers lie beneath the sarcophagus and another 74 in a semicircle around the sarcophagus. Every half hour a carillon at the central point plays several melodies. The carillon has no less than 25 bells and is approximately 4 metres high. It is an initiative of relatives of the fallen. The cemetery is no less than 28 hectares in size. Almost 32,000 war dead from the Second World War are buried there. It is not only German Wehrmacht soldiers who are buried here. SS members, war criminals, Dutch collaborators, foreign volunteers of the Wehrmacht and civilians are also buried here. All crosses are identical and made of natural stone. In white is stated: the name, date of birth and death and, if known, the rank in the army. At the foot of the cross is the grave number, which in turn corresponds to the personal data in the visitors' centre. Approximately 5,000 dead have not been identified. They all have the inscription: “Ein deutscher soldat”.
