In particular, comments that her “bestselling” novels are not literary and claims that her beauty as a female writer overshadows her success are the most striking examples of the sexist prejudices she has encountered. The most memorable of these attacks was an article titled “Flies Land on the Dirt” written by a male writer in the Cumhuriyet newspaper, referring to Kulin and two female writers. This rude and derogatory language clearly revealed not only Kulin but also the mentality that threatened the existence of female writers in the literary world. Kulin felt it was his responsibility to shed light on the prejudices that female writers faced by specifically including this article in his book. “Forty Years with My Pen” draws a map of a literary geography that extends from the bullet holes of Sarajevo to Türkan Saylan’s hopeful Snowdrops, from Füreya’s artistic journey to the lost history of Istanbul.
