András Dezső: You can't get out of a serious mafia organization. Fact-finding journalist, Telex employee and author of numerous bestsellers dealing with the history of domestic organized crime. András Dezső's easy-to-read documentary novels, such as Mafiosos in Teddy Bear Pants, The Big Boss, or Magyar Cola take place in real-life Hungarian mafia circles. Alinda Veiszer talks to him in the latest episode of Mozinet Nagylátószög about the film The First Traitor, which is available at Cinégo. The main character of the first traitor is Tommaso Buscetta, thanks to his testimony Judge Falcone was able to bring the Sicilian mafia, Cosa Nostra, to its knees. The "first traitor" sat on the witness stand even though he knew exactly that he was putting his own life, his family's and his friends' lives in danger. In the revenge campaign of the mafia, he executed 33 of his relatives. To this day, many people still don't understand what prompted Buscetta, who had previously become infamous as a merciless assassin, to be the first to confront the leaders of the mafia with their actions. "The mafia, organized crime, requires an intellect. It's like running a business: you have to see through systems, you have to know people well, you have to make decisions, etc. So it's an intellectual activity, which is otherwise rarely accompanied by violence." According to András Dezső, contrary to the image of mobsters depicted in pop culture, in reality organized crime rarely involves violent crimes. Basically, it is more similar to running a company, and in this respect it is mainly intellectual work. And violence harms business because it creates a sensation and can draw the attention of the authorities to illegal activities. "It's also not true that there are bad guys and good guys, it's obviously very nuanced. A criminal can be, say, violent at work and a loving father at home." András Dezső also refutes the opinion that a mobster must have a clearly negative character. They can have the same nuanced personality as anyone else, and in fact, it is extremely rare for someone to end up in organized crime as a psychopath. More important is socialization, hardening of previous crimes. "There is obviously a tradition of this in Italy. You have to imagine the mafia there as a local government, part of the community. In Hungary, criminal groups are organized according to interests, loyalty is not that strong." Hungarian organized crime - mainly due to the lack of traditions - shows many differences compared to Italy. Individual interests are more important than belonging to the organization and loyalty.
