About :

Joanna I of Castile, popularly known as Joanna the Mad, was a key figure in the genesis of the Spanish Empire that dominated the Western world in the 16th century. Daughter of the Catholic Monarchs, mother of Charles I and grandmother of Philip II, her stormy marriage to Philip the Handsome and his sudden death affected her emotional stability... or was she branded crazy and confined just to seize power from him? In this documentary video in Spanish we tell you the biography of Joanna I of Castile so that you can learn the full story of the life of the woman known as Joanna the Mad. #biography #history #documentary Joanna I of Castile is undoubtedly a controversial historical figure. And, of course, she did not have an easy life. She was widowed at the age of 26, after having six children with her husband, Philip the Handsome, whom she barely saw because she spent 46 of the 75 years she lived locked up under strict surveillance in the Castilian town of Tordesillas. First by order of her father, Ferdinand the Catholic; and then by the will of her own eldest son, Charles I of Spain and V of the Holy Roman Empire. Always with the same excuse: Joan's supposed inability to deal with public affairs and even her own person. But was she deranged? Did she suffer from some mental illness such as depression or schizophrenia, aggravated by the ignorance of the time about these illnesses and her very long confinement? Or were her illnesses inventions of those who wanted to remove her from power to reign themselves? Who was this woman really? Joan came into this world in Toledo on November 6, 1479. She was the third to be born of the five children of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabel and Fernando, who at that time were uniting their respective kingdoms: Castile, which was hers, and Aragon, which was his. In the Iberian Peninsula, only Portugal, Navarre and the Muslim kingdom of Granada escaped her control. The year in which Joan was born was not just any other. It was the year of the death of her paternal grandfather, John II of Aragon, and therefore the year of the ascension to the Aragonese throne of Ferdinand, later called the Catholic. This brought about the dynastic unity of Castile and Aragon, since Ferdinand and Isabella had been married ten years earlier. She had come to power in Castile in 1474, after a war of succession against the supporters of the other pretender to the throne, her niece Juana la Beltraneja, daughter of the recently deceased king of Castile, Henry IV, Isabella's brother on her father's side. What was the world like when Joan arrived? In what court would she spend the first years of her life? It was a time of astonishing change. For Europeans, the planet was about to reveal itself as a much larger place than they had imagined. Pressed by the rising Ottoman Empire from the east, and led by Spanish and Portuguese navigators, they were to discover that Africa was much more than a long coastline; and that on the other side of the dreaded Atlantic there was a vast continent populated by an astonishing variety of peoples, some of them complex empires and civilizations. For Europeans, it was an expanding world. Thank you for visiting our channel. We are Raquel de la Morena and Pedro Estrada, journalists and writers.
