About :

In this episode of Workshop Vlog 15 we take you along with us on our extensive restoration of the Volkswagen LT camper. The work in the garage is progressing steadily. At the moment we are busy drilling out spot welds so that we can weld the new parts into the bus later. It is a time-consuming and sometimes frustrating job, but it is part of the job. We also prepared Dellie for winter. After the last holiday she was still driving around with water in the radiator, which could be a problem with the first night frost. Although it was still light frost at the time, I still woke up worried in the morning. Fortunately, that has now been resolved: the radiator has been filled with antifreeze, the oil has been checked and the winter tires have been fitted. Dellie is completely ready for winter – I, on the other hand, am not quite there yet! Last week we also covered quite a few kilometers. We drove to Germany twice to pick up a BMW. The first time was a disappointment, because the seller turned out not to be honest; the car was missing a number of essential parts. The second attempt went better. The salesman had removed the EGR cooler at the last minute to sell it to another customer, which now makes the BMW sound like a tractor. To make matters worse, upon arrival the BMW's battery was flat and the key was still in the ignition. A mechanic had left the door ajar so that he could use a battery booster and a metal pen to operate the unlock button on the dashboard. Call me old-fashioned, but I think this is one of the most laborious ways to open a car. Ever heard of a key? Unfortunately, the salesman had pushed the door shut, making the button inaccessible. After a lot of cursing and swearing, the German mechanic managed to open the car with a wedge and a piece of wood. It was an adventure in itself. In the end, we were allowed to take the BMW home on the trailer. As is often the case with bargains, this car also has an interesting history, we start with the mileage which is just over 200,000 (approximately 124,000 miles), which is considered 'as good as new' by experts of this extremely strong BMW engine. The car was stranded in Germany last summer after a collision on the Autobahn. This BMW is originally from England (and therefore has the steering wheel on the wrong side) and therefore has a lower value here on the European mainland, where people drive on the right. These cars are normally very popular with buyers from former Eastern Bloc countries, where anything that can still drive or roll is eagerly bought. I have been keeping a close eye on my favorite German car sales sites in recent months looking for a deal. Most BMWs were sold within half a day, regardless of their condition or mileage. But this English car had not aroused any interest for them. Two months ago it was still for sale for 4000 euros, and it kept dropping in price, but when the seller finally decided to cut his losses, my patience paid off: we were able to take the BMW for just 1000 euros – in 20 notes, because the ATM had run out of 50 notes. What is bad luck for some, turned out to be good luck for us: we managed to get the E60 for a song and are very happy with it! In the meantime, we are counting down to our next big trip: in mid-December we will follow in the footsteps of Saint Nicholas and leave for Spain for a two-week winter stay in a rented camper. We want to experience camper life and find out which layout works best for us and to discover what is useful, what could be improved and what is really necessary. We are very much looking forward to spending Christmas under the Spanish sun. Or will it be a white Christmas in Austria? We will see!t
