For centuries, the territories of Romania were subject to various influences – including Turkish, and from the 19th century Russian. Thanks to the latter, Wallachia and Moldavia found themselves within the sphere of influence of the culture of Western civilization. The process of building Romanian national identity began in the 19th century. This was achieved through the reform of education and the change of the alphabet to Latin, as well as the agrarian reform, which granted peasants various personal freedoms. In the second half of the 19th century, the United Principality, and then the Kingdom of Romania, drew models from the French culture, and due to the adopted constitutional model, it was called the "Belgium of the East".
