The objective of this lesson is to know what the harmonic language is, the guitar chords that are used in the following musical styles: Blues, Funk, Bolero, Bossa Nova, Gypsy Jazz, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Ranchera and pasillo. We will see the different types of chords that are used and we will look at the different voicings that are used to achieve the appropriate sound in each of the different musical styles. In some styles such as pop, rock and ranchera, the harmonic language will be basic, often limited to triad chords, using first position chords and barres. In other styles such as Funk, the language can be basic, in some cases sevenths are worked on, but its main characteristic is the use of chords in the higher registers, thereby achieving a brighter sound. Gypsy Jazz uses a language of sevenths and sixth chords, this is one of the characteristics of the style as well as the percussive style and some specific voicings for this style. Jazz and Bossa Nova use a more complete harmonic language, we will find more interesting guitar chords such as ninths, elevenths and trecenas, particularly in Bossa, which is characterized by being the most complex style among those seen in this lesson. The guitar is an instrument with a very broad harmonic language, this is because it is not only the types of chords that must be studied, it happens that each chord has many interpretation alternatives, from roots and voicings, as well as inversions, so we have a long way to go. This is something that we work on in our complete guitar course that you can find on our website.
