How was Riga restarted? ???? Ainārs Šlesers and Oļegs Burovs visit the Vidzeme Market, located in the very center of Riga, and get acquainted with the situation there. The Vidzeme Market, unofficially also known as the Matīsa Market, is one of the Riga markets, established in the fall of 1902 at the intersection of Brīvības and Matīsa Streets. The oldest market in the Vidzeme suburb was the Aleksandra Market, which was located at the intersection of Tallinas Street, where the Riga New Saint Gertrude Evangelical Lutheran Church is now located. On October 15, 1902, brick pavilions designed by the Riga city architect Reinholds Šmēlings for the sale of meat and other products, as well as an administrative building in the center of the market square, were opened. Trading from carts was also allowed. The place was said to have been famous for its dairy products, especially butter. In 1924, it was renamed the Vidzeme Market, and in 1929, a separate pavilion for herring was built. In 1938, a tenement house was built on the corner of Brīvības and Matīsa streets, the basement of which was used by the market for ice chambers, and the first floor for various market services. On the courtyard side, 31 heated stands for fruits and flowers were set up and public toilets were installed at the entrance to Brīvības street, and the old administration building in the center of the square was demolished. ????????
