From August 1 to 23, the 23-day camp of this summer's second national defense training (hereinafter - VAM) took place at the military range of the National Armed Forces "Lāčusils", which was successfully completed by 72 students. The VAM camp program was very diverse, combining both physical training, such as field combat training, as well as theoretical knowledge of weapons and tactics. The young people also improved their orientation skills, which can be useful not only in the military environment, but also in everyday life. At the end of the camp, on August 23, the director of the Young Guard Center, Colonel Aivis Mirbahs, addressed the students. In his speech, A. Mirbach praised the young people for making the right choice by choosing to participate in such a camp. Andris Astratovs (16 years old) from Baltinava secondary school chose to participate in the camp because he likes the military theme very much. In addition to the fact that he has been a young guard for almost 9 years, after high school the boy has decided to connect his life with the military sphere. Andra's dream is to work in the special tasks unit! Laura Sigalova (17 years old) from Bauska State Gymnasium says that thanks to VAM classes, she also joined Jaunsardze, especially praising her instructor Raivi Naumov. On the other hand, Rūta Vonaga (18 years old) from Nautrēni Secondary School participated in the VAM camp for the second time. Last summer, she participated in the VAM 11-day camp, so this year she decided to raise the bar higher. What Ruth liked best about the camp was the training and the discipline there. This year, a total of two VAM 23-day camps were organized, which were completed by a total of 112 learners. The purpose of the VAM is to promote civic awareness and patriotism, as well as to provide an opportunity to learn basic military skills and abilities, creating citizens who are civically responsible and loyal to Latvia, which are vital in the context of comprehensive national defense.
