Traveling in a motorhome is considered to be varied and a cheap alternative to a hotel. But the costs from renting a motorhome to returning it add up. SWR presenter Johannes Zenglein traveled to Lake Constance in his rented motorhome and added up the expenses for four days of vacation. He explains how the rental price for a motorhome is made up and gives tips on what to look out for when renting one. Not every vehicle is equally suitable for everyone. He also learns how expensive 5-star campsites differ from cheap ones. The rental for the motorhome is by no means everything Although he is travelling alone, Johannes Zenglein rents a motorhome that is also suitable for families - rent per day 132 euros. And that's not all: cutlery and pots cost an extra 42 euros, plus bedding for 52 euros. For the camping set, i.e. a table and two chairs, there is an additional 40 euros. The renter of a motorhome pays a deposit and with an excess you also have fully comprehensive insurance. The excess is 1,200 euros - higher than the rental price for the four days' holiday. There is also a handover fee. For four days in the motorhome, this adds up to almost 800 euros. "Let someone say that a camping holiday is cheap." Pitches on Lake Constance with star comfort - and without Lake Constance is a popular holiday destination. In 2019, more than 4.9 million tourists stayed here overnight. Johannes Zenglein tested a large 5-star campsite near Lindau, a smaller, family-friendly campsite in the nature reserve in Bodmann-Ludwigshafen, a public parking space for motorhomes in Friedrichshafen and a free parking option on a farm in Airach. The ostrich farm belongs to the "Landvergnügen" association with 800 farms in Germany, where you can stay for free with your motorhome. The bottom line is that the SWR presenter's costs are as follows: On the first two days, he spent around 850 euros. In addition, there are 60 euros for food and around 68 euros for fuel. That makes a total of around 976 euros for the four-day vacation. That's a lot of money for one person - but four people could have easily traveled with this motorhome. Rent or buy a motorhome? However, the purchase costs are even higher than the rental prices. For example, if you calculate with a new motorhome worth around 85,000 euros, it looks like this: The rented motorhome cost 132 euros per day. For 85,000 euros, you could rent it for almost 650 days. So if you only want to travel with a motorhome once a year, it's better to rent one instead of buying one.
