Debate organized as part of the 21st Science Festival in Warsaw, September 22, 2017 https://wszechnica.org.pl/wyklad/nier... Did the Universe have a beginning and will it have an end? Does the description of the whole result from the descriptions of the parts? Is there an objective physical reality? During the debate inaugurating the 21st Science Festival in Warsaw, Dr. Habil. Jan Chwedeńczuk, Prof. Marek Pfützner, Dr. Habil. Anna Niedźwiecka and Prof. Krzysztof Meissner spoke about the challenges facing contemporary physics. Chwedeńczuk presented the difficulties in reconciling the discoveries of quantum mechanics, where particles can be in several states simultaneously, with everyday human experience (after all, in our perception of reality, we and all the things around us appear in one form at once). Pfützner spoke about the problems associated with the study of multi-element systems. He wondered whether the description of the whole results from the description of the parts or whether the way the human mind functions makes us think this way. Niedźwiecka asked about molecular mechanisms related to neurophysiological phenomena. She spoke about problems with studying physical interactions inside the cell. She asked whether there is an undiscovered law of physics that initiated the process of evolution. She wondered whether physics is able to explain the functionality of living organisms. Prof. Meissner spoke about the mystery of why matter was created in greater quantities than antimatter in the early universe. He also raised the question of whether there are traces of the previous universe in our universe.
