ALLIANÇA FARM Barra do Piraí - RJ #farm310 1863 Do you like this style of architecture? Joaquim José Pereira de Faro, a Portuguese from Braga, emigrated to Brazil in 1793 and in Rio de Janeiro, dedicated himself to trade and the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved Africans. He belonged to the court of D. João VI and D. Pedro I and was honored with the title of Baron of Rio Bonito in 1841. In the early 19th century, he founded two farms: São Joaquim das Ipiabas and Sant'Anna do Parahyba; he had nine children and four of them settled on farms in the region. Among them, João Pereira Darrigue de Faro, who, following in his father's footsteps, achieved great social prominence in the Court and was the second Baron of Rio Bonito, founded the Monte Alegre Farm, in addition to inheriting the Sant' Anna Farm. In 1864, Barra do Piraí was the largest railway junction in Brazil and won the dispute with Vassouras for its construction. Fazenda Boa Esperança was sold by Luiz to his nephew José Pereira de Faro, who changed the name of this farm to Alliança. A cultured man with liberal ideas, he studied in Europe. When he returned from his studies, he occupied himself with rural life from the age of 20 and turned his attention to the development of the town of São Benedito de Barra do Piraí. He built the beautiful Sant'Anna church in this town in 1881. José Pereira de Faro acquired Alliança, his working farm, and lived on the Sant'Anna Farm. Alliança was purchased with its coffee production unit already built, consisting of a house, stone yards, coffee processing mills, barns, slave quarters, storehouses, etc. From this date on, José began modernizing the farm's coffee complex, expanding the coffee plantations (more than 700,000 plants), terraces – and making improvements to the buildings and machinery. An imposing neoclassical-style portico was built on the side façade, with the triangular pediment bearing the year the work was completed, 1863. The farm was not the Faro family's home, but it was the family's most important productive farm.
