What is Nafs, Ruh and Sir, Buya Arrazy Hasyim - An nafs in the Arabic dictionary is often given the same meaning as the soul (ruh), as understood from the verse: (when the soul is reunited with the body), but it can also be interpreted as a human person in totality, as understood from the verse: (I do not free myself, often lust drives myself to commit sin). In addition, there are other meanings, including: the essence/nature of something, the physical body (corpse), and blood. Hans Wehr wrote the possible meanings of nafs in English: soul, psyche, spirit, mind, human being, person, individual, essence. nature, desire, personal identity, self. Nafs is comparable to the soul which in Latin is called anima and in Greek is called psyche. From the linguistic description above, nafs can be interpreted as a personal essence, both concrete and abstract. Unlike the soul, the nafs refers more to the whole person (consisting of mind, soul, blood, and body). The entire human essence is what distinguishes one human character from another.
