Peter Hilsendegen explains the Super Slender Axis cultivation system (super spindle cultivation). In this system, cherries of particularly good quality can be produced. When pruning, care is taken to cultivate a slender tree with as high a proportion of annual shoots as possible. The flower buds are found sporadically on the annual shoots. This is why the best fruit quality can be expected there. On perennial wood, buds are usually found in bunches (bouquet shoots). These are not desired in super spindle cultivation, as the fruit quality suffers due to competition between the individual cherries. Pruning takes place twice a year: once in spring and once in summer. The aim is to encourage flowering, ensure optimal lighting and maintain the necessary growth. More wood buds (leaf buds) are left near the ground than in the treetop. In commercial fruit cultivation, this system can only be recommended for premium varieties in good locations. Irrigation, crop protection (hail net, plastic roof) and greening management are also recommended for stable yields. The minimum planting distance for this system is just 50cm. This allows up to around 5,700 trees to be planted per hectare with a planting distance of 3.5 x 0.5m. The cultivation system requires the use of weak-growing rootstocks such as Gisela 5. The best trees for this system are annual grafted canes without side branching. These should have short internodes. The advantages of the system are clear: 1. The first yields can be achieved as early as the second year. A full yield is possible as early as the third year. 2. The cutting process is uncomplicated and easy to explain. 3. The individual work steps in this cultivation system can be designed efficiently. 4. The high initial yields can shorten the payback period. The disadvantages of the cultivation system: 1. Higher costs for the planting material due to the high number of trees. 2. Deadlines must be precisely organized. In hobby cultivation, this system is possible with all types of cherries. Here, too, high-quality cherries can be harvested in a very small space. Since there are no types of cherries that have a natural columnar growth, the only option at present is to train a columnar cherry tree in the long term.
