Robert Hans van Gulik (August 9, 1910 – September 24, 1967) was a brilliant Dutch linguist, highly educated orientalist, diplomat, musician (he played the Chin zither) and writer, best known as the author of detective stories about the Ti judges, whose main character he borrowed from the 18th-century Chinese detective novel The Famous Cases of Judge Ti. He grew up in Indonesia, where he also learned Chinese. From 1935 he worked as a Dutch diplomat in Japan, China, India and Lebanon.
