Mr. Laudan, the owner of a castle, angry that the rentier Testeaux does not want to sell his house, goes personally to his house to deal with the matter, but is refused. Immediately after the castellan's departure, Mr. Testeaux hears insistent knocking on the door: he is a wounded young man, chased by the police because he had written an article in a communist newspaper, but also because he possessed a compromising letter for a politician. The young man wanted to cross the border urgently, but seeing some suspicious people on the train, he jumped from the train and sprained his leg. Testeux offers to host him for a few hours, and even lends him his bicycle so he can cross the border into Switzerland. Testeaux meanwhile receives a letter from his son and learns that he had been gambling at the casino and had lost a lot of money (which he had to pay back). The young fugitive, hearing from the other room of M. Testeaux's financial problem, puts the sum of 25 thousand francs into his coat pocket and leaves. The police, who were after the Communist, finding a coat discarded near Testeaux's house and learning that a large sum of money had been transferred in the name of a young man in Paris, believe that Testeaux killed the young man and pick him up for investigation, taking him right at Mr. Laudan's dog, where the investigative judgment was. Testeaux, however, is so skilled that he continually leads the judge down the wrong tracks to help the fugitive buy time. When the police close in on the fugitive's tracks, Testeaux ends up confessing that he killed him and that he buried him in a forest. In this way the young communist who had helped him with money manages to reach Switzerland, from where he sends a letter of thanks...
