According to legend, the pilgrimage church of St. Leonhard in Kundl is traced back to a betrothal: around 1019, Henry II was reminded by his horse of an earlier promise to build a church here in Kundl. The tradition of the Kundl Leonhardi ride has been documented since the 1960s. The impetus for the creation of this tradition was the lack of money that was urgently needed for the restoration of the pilgrimage church. At a meeting of the state animal breeding association, the idea of a Leonhardi ride was well received and the foundation for this tradition was laid with the willingness to pay a fee for each large and small livestock unit. The proceeds from the sale of Leonhard thalers, Leonhard pennies and Leonhard tablets largely covered the renovation costs. And since then, the tradition of the Leonhardi ride has been maintained every year in Kundl: in honor of the popular livestock patron, Leonhard. On November 12th, 2023 at 12:15 p.m. the ride begins from the village center in Kundl - it continues towards St. Leonhard. As always, the procession will be led by the Kundl music band. As befits the occasion, in addition to the decorated horses and teams, the float with the harvest crown will also be there. This will be followed by a field mass and blessing of the horses with local pastor Dr. Piotr Stachiewicz and pastor Dr. Josef Johann Pletzer.
