April 18 marked the 31st anniversary of the Bashlibel tragedy, one of the bloodiest pages of human history. Although this tragedy was reported many times in the international arena, the true voice of Azerbaijan was silenced and ignored. Bashlibel is now free. However, this tragedy and its victims will not be forgotten. To commemorate the victims of Bashlibel tragedy, Moderator.az team went to Kalbajar, Bashlibel village. We started the trip by visiting the grave of the late journalist Zulfugar Huseynzade, who was the director of the Moderator.az website and the grandson of Pari grandmother, who was one of the victims of the said tragedy. Zulfugar Huseynzade spoke about the Bashlibel tragedy in the Azerbaijani press for 30 years and did everything he could to investigate this tragedy. Last year, he died of a heart attack in Bashlibel while visiting the graves of the victims of the Bashlibel tragedy. After visiting the grave of Zulfugar Huseynzade located in Barda district, we headed to Kalbajar. It should be noted that after the occupation of Kalbajar by Armenian armed forces in early April 1993, 62 residents of Bashlibel village could not leave their homes in time, they retreated to the mountains to protect themselves from the enemy and were able to hide in the caves for only 18 days. On April 18, Armenian armed groups killed 18 people and took 14 hostages after discovering the shelters of the residents. The 30 survivors moved only at night and hid during the day. After 113 days, they were able to get out of the siege of the Armenian army through secret mountain roads.
