Today we take it for granted that South Tyrol is an integral but autonomous part of Italy. But if we look back in time, we see that this was not always the case. Until the end of World War I in 1918, South Tyrol and Trentino belonged to the County of Tyrol and had been part of the Habsburg Empire for more than 550 years. The county was given to the Habsburgs in 1363 by Margaret of Tyrol, also known as Margaret Maultasch, as she herself had no direct heirs after her husband and son died young.
