In the first episode of Man en Kunst, presenter Lucas De Man delves into the special painting Panorama Mesdag (1881) by Hendrik Willem Mesdag. Read more about the painting and listen to suitable classical music pieces, chosen by listeners of the NPO Radio 4 program De Klassieken. The largest painting in the Netherlands... that is Panorama Mesdag! It is no less than 120 meters long and over 14 meters high and hangs in the Zeestraat in The Hague. The overwhelming canvas shows the sea, the dunes and the village of Scheveningen 360 degrees around. These types of panoramas were very popular at the end of the 19th century, as a kind of precursor to virtual reality. You really get the feeling that you are standing on top of a dune.
