Tomasz Grzyb, Dean of the Faculty of Psychology at SWPS University in Wrocław. An example is the Chernobyl disaster, where the pressure of authority did not allow employees to resist the incorrectly conducted tests of the power plant. Obedience to authority was studied in a groundbreaking way for psychology in the 1960s by Stanley Milgram. It is a well-known story. Milgram wanted to check the susceptibility to authority (as he believed, special) in German society (we are after World War II), and in the USA he wanted to conduct a control study. However, the scale of susceptibility to authority (in this case of a scientist in a kilt) was staggering: it turned out that the Americans studied were ready to shock innocent people with electricity, even so strong that they could kill them. On average, 60% of the subjects reached the end of the scale. The “shock” was fictitious, and the second “subject” (as the real subjects believed) was an actor. Stanley Milgram’s experiments were widely commented on and controversial, due to the psychological costs of the subjects. Prof. Tomasz Grzyb and Prof. Dariusz Dolinski conducted a series of similar experiments in Poland. They were modified for ethical reasons, including the study being stopped before reaching the scale – the limit was 150 V. Both in Milgram's experiments and in Poland, no simple variable (gender, age, education) was found that would affect the tendency to obey. In other words: none of us knows how we would behave in a situation of such pressure. Prof. Grzyb and Prof. Dolinski conducted a number of variants looking for circumstances that would weaken this pathological obedience. However, in almost every version, the results were similar. Only the version in which a similarity was suggested between the subject and the "subject" who was to be "shocked" with electricity caused a weakening of obedience. They described the whole thing in the book "Obedient to Pain". You will also learn how to deal with a situation when you feel forced to make quick decisions (you can ask for time, if it is taken away from us, we are probably in a situation where someone wants to manipulate us).
