Because there is no such thing as the perfect PC for all purposes, the c't hardware department regularly puts together several kits optimized for different applications. This time it's a cheap gaming PC for 650 euros and an expandable high-end PC starting at 1530 euros. c't editors Christian Hirsch and Carsten Spille present both PCs and give many other tips on the current component situation. We also briefly discuss which c't construction suggestions from previous months are still relevant, for example the quiet mini PC from c't 17/2024 and the midi PC from c't 8/2024. If you want to replace an older PC, you can also find out which components can perhaps be reused in the new optimal PC - or whether you would rather pass on the old one completely. The high-end PC works on an AMD basis. It can be built either as a computing monster with a sixteen-core processor and onboard graphics or as a gaming PC with an X3D processor and powerful graphics card - or even with a powerful CPU and gaming graphics. Stable operation in all configurations and as little fan noise as possible were particularly important. It is prepared for the next generation of graphics cards in 2025. The gaming PC delivers adequate 3D power for smooth frame rates with a high level of detail - but only up to FullHD resolution, that is the compromise. Because it doesn't have to be the very latest platform, the previous generations of CPU and GPU are sufficient. Christian and Carsten explain which extensions are possible.
