Only a few would say no, that Carlos Gardel was born in Toulouse, France, and was therefore not strictly Argentine. Fans would say that Gardel declared in an interview that he was “born in Buenos Aires at the age of two” so he was indeed Argentine, not French and certainly not Uruguayan as others suggest. But... what is the correct answer? Is it all three? None of them? In this video, Argentine historian, professor and popularizer Felipe Pigna tells us this and other stories in great detail. Known for his narrative approach full of humanity, he does not limit himself to simply narrating facts, but also seeks to understand and convey the feelings and contexts surrounding historical events. This perspective allows him to connect with his readers and listeners on a deeper level, making history more meaningful: “I really like to get into those interstices of history and find out who those second lines are, men, women, children, who are behind each of the stories. The anonymous and the anecdotes seem interesting to me as a historical element to describe the characters.” The historian has forged a particular path in the way history is taught and perceived in Argentina.
