Time holds many mysteries: it is the only physical quantity that only knows one direction. But unlike clocks, which always show the same units, people experience the passage of time differently. Harald Lesch examines turning points in the perception of time. For thousands of years we lived according to the cycles of nature. For our ancestors, it was the changes brought about by the seasons that determined the time of their lives. This only changed in the 6th century with the start of the dating that is still common today. But it was to be more than half a millennium before mechanical clocks took over the reigns of time. Since then, our relationship to time has changed radically. And that also applies to our understanding of the planetary past.
