He took part in the battles that followed until the liberation of the entire region of Epirus, showing a spirit of heroism and daring. For his action he was awarded his first medal of bravery and at his own request was made permanent as a non-commissioned officer with the rank of Sergeant Major. He took part in the battles of the First World War and in 1919 he participated in the Crimean campaign where he was promoted to the rank of Anti-Insurgent and later he also participated in the Asia Minor campaign, where he fought in the battles in Eski-Sehir and Afyon-Karahisar. In 1923, after the Asia Minor disaster, he was promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant, in 1928 to the rank of Comptroller, in 1932 to the rank of Captain, while in 1937 he was promoted to the rank of Major and served as Commander in various Artillery Units. Kostakis was demobilized in February 1940, but in August of the same year he was recalled as a permanent reserve and due to his war experience, he was already a veteran of three wars (Balkan, Crimean, Asia Minor), his special abilities but also his knowledge of the wider region, he joined the staff of the VIII Division, where he served under orders of the nationalist Major General Charalambos Katsimitros as well as Colonel Panagiotis Mavroyiannis, and prepared the first line of defense on the territory of the border and not on the second line which was the Arachthos river, as planned by the General Staff Officers in Athens. In order to ensure the defense of the Greek territory on the heights of Grabala, three Artillery observation posts were set up, one on the main hill of Grabala led by the Commander of the 8th Artillery Regiment of Ioannina Colonel Alexandros Asimakopoulos, the other on the side hill Adonitsa led by the same Major Constitution Artillery Konstantinos Versi, as well as a third observation post on the heights of Chrysorachis led by Major Dimitrios Kostakis also of the same Artillery Regiment.
