In a recent shocking report on minorities, the European Union writes that the Irish Traveller community in England and Ireland suffers the most from poverty and is probably the most discriminated against minority in Europe today. Although they are hardly known to many, there are now over 40,000 Irish Travellers living in England and Ireland. They are often compared to the Roma, with whom they share the travelling lifestyle. Otherwise, they are excluded and discriminated against even more than other minorities. In England and Ireland, racism against this travelling people is deeply rooted. But their situation is clearly getting worse. Irish Travellers have long lived on the fringes of society. The serious study by the European Union, however, caused shock, especially because of the figures it found: today 11% of Irish Travellers commit suicide and only 3% of them live beyond the age of 65. These are the worst statistics for a population group in Europe.
