At the age of 21, Ragnar Ulstein fled with a skate from Ulsteinvik to England and actively entered the fight against the German occupiers. In London, he was recruited into the Linge company by the leader himself, Martin Linge. Ragnar took part in the Lofoten raid in December 1941. In September 1943, Ragnar, together with Harald Svindseth and Nils Fjeld, was designated to blow up German vessels anchored in Nordgulen in Sogn og Fjordane in operation Vestige I.
