It is particularly well known for its medicinal uses. The plant contains artemisinin, an active ingredient used in the treatment of malaria. Artemisia annua has feathery leaves and small yellow flowers. The use of Artemisia annua is historically documented in traditional Chinese medicine, but in recent decades it has become known worldwide due to its effectiveness in malaria treatment. Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) are now an important part of malaria treatment and control. There is also research interest in the plant for potential applications in cancer control and other medical fields.
