On August 7, 1420, construction began that would architecturally change the world. How could Brunelleschi, a mere goldsmith with no formal training as an architect, build one of the most beautiful jewels of the Italian Renaissance and the great symbol of Florence? The dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence was completed in 1436. Its gentle curves and innovative engineering are a monument to Filippo Brunelleschi, who designed his masterpiece as two domes, one inside the other. Although not considered to be of exceptional pictorial mastery, the scenes of The Last Judgement painted by Vasari and Zuccaro on the interior dome are among the largest mural paintings in the world.
