Why do we buy a product that we are asked not to buy? The episode examines cigarettes and the history of smoking from a non-advertising or promotional perspective, but rather contemplates the historical justifications that accompanied a deadly habit like smoking and gave it its appeal in different cultures, starting from the New World, the origin of the tobacco plant, all the way to European, Asian and Eastern cultures that embraced tobacco and made it part of the customs of their inhabitants. In a narrative in which the story of the cigarette varies between being a symbol of the upper classes, being a relaxation remedy during wars, being a national or cinematic symbol, or a symbol of women’s liberation. Each cigarette story in a particular era has earned the tobacco industry loyal consumers who meet urgent psychological needs by having the habit of smoking. Today, smoking is still a common habit, although cigarettes have become the only commodity whose manufacturers are forced to accompany their sale with a direct message explaining its harms, which can be fatal, in a written warning and medically illustrated in a repulsive manner.
