Speaking of the three monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, as Abrahamic religions emphasizes their common roots as sister traditions. In Judaism, Abraham is the patriarch of the Jews and the one with whom God “made an everlasting covenant.” In the New Testament, Abraham is a symbol of faith and is particularly important to the Lutheran heritage because of the emphasis on justification by faith: “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” In Islam, the prophet Abraham marks the beginning of monotheism, he founded the Kaaba temple in Mecca with Ishmael, and his willingness to sacrifice Isaac is celebrated with the Eid al-Adha festival, which proclaims obedience to God, from which the word Islam comes. Inter-religious tension is one of the areas of conflict in our time, both between and within religions, and awareness of their common roots is an important step towards understanding, tolerance and a prosperous coexistence of the traditions to which the majority of humanity belongs. This video is part of a Bible education program for adults called The Heritage of the Bible. The project is being carried out by Garðasókn in Garðakirkja and supported by the Kjalarnes Provincial Fund. The project is supervised by Dr. Sigurvin Lárus Jónsson and the film is produced by Eggert Gunnarsson.
