Eloquence is the art of expressing oneself orally with brilliance, by delivering a witty, subtle and lively speech with the aim of winning the audience's support. At Sciences Po, eloquence is part of the School's DNA. This quality is cultivated year after year, class after class, in the form of the highly renowned eloquence competition, now called the Philippe Séguin Prize for Oratory Arts, which aims to reward the best oral performances by students. The rules have not changed since its creation: participants speak in front of a packed room, behind a lectern equipped with microphones and of course without any written notes. These conditions may intimidate more than one person... but certainly not our students. In 2018, more than 351 participants took on the task. Of these, only a handful made it to the finals. A look back at the six best performances of the 2018 vintage: Manon de Cabarrus (first-year student) relates a dream through a clever mise en abyme, which alternately confuses actor and spectator. Stanislas Baudry (second-year student) offers a humorous vision of the social elevator. Are we all born equal? Do we remain equal? Why? Anatole Grieu (second-year student) presents the satire of a literary scholar who shares his latest reading, with panache and devotion. Célia Boutagga has some advice to give to the devil. Samuel Dimbour (second-year student) makes life experiences rhyme with poetry. This year, the winner of the 2018 Philippe Séguin Prize was rewarded by Madame Aurélie Filipetti, former Minister of Culture and Communication and President of the jury.
