The documentary takes a look behind the scenes in the global fight against tax evasion by large corporations. The topic is of great importance: in times of increasing inequality and growing populism, tax revenues are used to finance the welfare state and the fight against climate change. Corona pandemic, Ukraine war, inflation, climate crisis, increasing inequality and poverty worldwide, growing populism. Politics has fallen into disrepute. States lack the funds for a comprehensive health and education system, for pensions - and especially for the fight against climate change, which has now taken on an existential dimension. There are approaches to a fairer and more sustainable society. One of them is based on ending tax evasion by large corporations. Thomas Piketty, Joseph Stiglitz, Eva Joly, Gabriel Zucman and Jayati Ghosh have committed themselves to this goal and founded the Independent Commission for the Reform of International Corporate Taxation (ICRICT) in 2015. They wrote reports, contacted ministries, held numerous conferences and repeatedly underlined the urgency of reorganizing the global tax system. After six years, their demands, which were initially dismissed as utopian, became the guideline for a historic tax reform, which was signed by 140 states in October 2021. It could provide states with around 220 billion dollars in additional tax revenue. That would still not be enough, but at least it is the first such change in this century. Tax evasion is no longer a minor offense and is punished more severely. The documentary traces the persuasive work of these economic experts: how they won over public opinion and were able to assert themselves against the most powerful corporations in the world.
