Surah Al-Ahzab was revealed in Medina towards the end of the fifth year of the Hijra. It has 73 verses. It takes its name from the word اَلأحْزَابُ (ahzâb) in the 20th verse. “Ahzâb” is the plural form of the word اَلْحِزْبُ (hizb), which means community, group, party, division, etc. The bundle of prayers that a person makes it a habit to read every day and one-fourth of a section in the Quran are also called hizb. In this surah, the word “ahzâb” refers to the polytheist Arab tribes that united to fight against the Muslims and other enemy forces that joined them. It is the 33rd surah according to the order of the Mushaf and the 97th surah in terms of its revelation.
