Winter 1945 – World War II is coming to an end. Poles who come to Lower Silesia come across German “treasures”. They find works of art in home hiding places and depositories, discover porcelain and jewelry bricked up in the walls of houses. Joanna Lamparska enters the hermetic world of seekers. In archives, she finds dramatic stories of crimes committed for gold, tracks the mafia trading in SS officers’ documents, talks to the children of “treasure guardians”. Together with readers, she explores underground facilities and palaces where works of art were hidden. She shows that after the end of World War II, the fight did not stop at all. A race against time begins in the “Polish treasure fever”. Although it is hard to believe, all the stories described in this book really happened.
