Mačkat is the only village in the Zlatibor district where no house is closed and a village where people do not leave. In that mountain village, which has about 1,000 inhabitants, the birth rate is still higher than the mortality rate, and the school in Mackato is attended by about 300 students. On the tourist map of Serbia, Mačkat is listed as the capital of the prosciutto empire because 70 percent of its inhabitants are directly or indirectly engaged in the production of dried meat products. And what would an empire be without a castle. And that's what Mackat has. The castle in Mackato was built by Ratko Šopalović, a blind knight who fought in the Balkans and in the First World War, from where he returned with seven decorations. In the battle at Kajmakčalan, a bullet pierced his temple and Ratko was left blind. While visiting the wounded in the hospital in Thessaloniki, Regent Aleksandar Karađorđević expressed his regret for the bad fate of this young man, to which Ratko replied: "I am even more sorry that I will no longer be able to shoot at the enemy and see a liberated Serbia." After the war, already as king, Aleksandar Karađorđević was the best man at Ratko's wedding, to whom he then entrusted the management of the military canteen in Sarajevo. Ratko started building a castle in Mackato in 1927 with the money he earned from that job. Before he lost his sight, he saw a similar castle in Greece and wanted to build one in his native village. After nine years of construction, this white stone edifice shone among the log cabins of Zlatibor, which is also a symbol of chivalry and patriotism, but also of a time when heroism and sacrifice were valued much more than today.
