Watch this video now and learn about the Art of Composition in Photography. One of the first rules of photographic composition that we hear when we are starting out is the Rule of Thirds. So far so good, but once we understand the concept, what else can we do to improve the composition of our photographs? The rule of thirds takes you to a certain point, but there are so many other ways to compose that will make your photo more interesting. In this video, my goal is to show you how you can think outside the rule of thirds and show you a new approach to composition. Photography Composition: POSITIONING Every time we are going to photograph just one object, we have to make the decision of where to place that object in the frame, whether we are going to place it in the center, on the edges or off-axis. When we start taking pictures, we tend to place everything in the center of the photo, which is fine, but after a while it ends up becoming monotonous. But to take the object out of the center, we need to have a reason, to show the surroundings of that object, to contextualize it in the scene. Photography Composition: HORIZON LINE It may not seem like it, but the horizon line has an essential impact on the mood of the photo, especially in landscape photographs. A composition with a lower positioning of the horizon gives the sensation of greater stability, and this applies to any photo. But the most important thing about the horizon is that it serves to highlight the sky or the foreground. FRAMES WITHIN FRAMES One of the most successful rules of photography composition is the frame within the frame. The frames within photographs are intended to guide the viewer through them, acting as a kind of window. RHYTHM To get away from the rule of thirds, when we have many similar elements in the photo, the arrangement you give them will create a certain sense of rhythm. This rhythm has a certain connection to music, since the beat in a piece of music has a connection to the visual beat. Since in this photo, the posts are equidistant, you create a visual rhythm in your photograph. The natural tendency of the eye to move side to side (as we mentioned before) is evident here, since rhythm needs direction and fluidity to exist. PERSPECTIVE AND DEPTH The constant relationship between the composition in photography and real scenes makes the sense of depth in a photo so important. Perspective is the appearance of objects in space and their relationship to the viewer. Okay, you said it beautifully, but what does that mean? It means that perspective is basically the size and distance we choose to give certain objects, to give them more or less emphasis, creating depth in the photos.
