Enslaved breeder with more than 250 children, do you know the story of the enslaved “Pata Seca”?? Below are the reports of the granddaughter of “Pata Seca” based on old documents. The name Pata Seca was because he had large hands and thin, dry fingers, which is why he became known as “pata seca”. Bought by contract in 1849, Pata Seca (1827-1958) was an enslaved breeder of the large estate of the Santa Eudóxia Farm. Having lived 131 years, he had more than 250 children. Pata Seca was bought by a cattle driver in the village of Sorocaba, around 1849, from there he was sold to the Fazenda Grande in São Carlos in the district of Santa Eudóxia, his owner was the Viscount of Cunha Bueno. There he was raised and soon selected as a breeding slave for the farm, because he was very strong, tall and had thin shins, one of the characteristics considered important at the time for producing strong and healthy male children. He was 2.18m tall and therefore excelled in manual labor. At that time, it was believed that slaves with thin legs had more male children, which was very interesting for those who enslaved them, because that way they could get free labor. He worked taking care of the horses at the main house and carrying mail from the city of São Carlos to the Fazenda Grande, which is why he ate better and had more benefits than slaves in general. Soon he was left only to reproduce and serve light food. He was loved by the owners of the farm, and only went to the slave quarters to reproduce with the enslaved women (unbelievable, right guys). His sons and brothers were not so lucky. Chained, they were trained to serve as labor and left much earlier. In 1888, when slavery was abolished in Brazil, the slave Pata Seca was registered as Roque José Florêncio. Married and on his farm called “Sítio Pata Seca”, he produced rapadura and skirts to sell in the surroundings of his farm to support his family. The same rapadura is now produced by his granddaughter and sold in the district. Pata Seca received 20 acres of land from his former owner after the end of slavery, but he did not have the money to fence the entire area and was only able to fence 2.5 acres; the rest was taken from him. He had 9 more children on this farm and remained there until the end of his life. To survive, he sold rapadura, chicken, eggs, cassava and even sold some household items. It is believed that he really died of tetanus after being unable to treat a wound on his foot in 1958. He had more than 250 children in the slave quarters throughout his life, most of whom worked on coffee plantations, and he left at the age of 131. What did you think of this story?
