The speaker Luis Fernández-Galiano characterises the last decade of Spanish architecture as a “slide”, from the widespread euphoria of the early years to the fall caused by the economic crisis of 2008. The contrast between the urban projects of the Barcelona Forum 2004, the Expo 2008 in Zaragoza and the cultural complexes of Matadero and Madrid Río (2006-2011) illustrate a tendency towards sustainability and self-criticism. The creative note lies in a new generation of creators who provide dignified and humble, imaginative and optimistic solutions in the face of the fall in public investment and austerity.
