3-cylinder engines are not actually a new technology. They were used as two-strokes in Saab 93, 95, 96 and some DKW vehicles in the 1950s and 60s. In fact, Saab's famous racer Erik Carlsson won world rallies many times in the 60s with his Saab 96 vehicle with a 3-cylinder engine. This technology, which is not new, is widely used in many models today. However, there is definitely a perception and knowledge problem.
