NR-17: ERGONOMICS was published by Ordinance 3,214 in 1978. Since then, it has undergone five changes, the last of which was in 2018 to adjust the guidelines related to illuminance, which now has NHO-11 from Fundacentro as its reference, since the previous reference, NBR 5413, was canceled. Psycho = mind Physiological = organism, body. Characterized as a General Standard by Ordinance SIT No. 787 of November 28, 2018, the wording of NR-17 establishes parameters to allow the adaptation of working conditions to the psychophysiological characteristics of workers. Here we have two interesting points to be observed... The first is the use of the term “psychophysiological”. It may seem complex, but separating the word makes it easy to understand that it is applied in the fields of psychology and physiology, because as we already know, NR-17 is not just about body posture (physiology), it is much more than that and the psychological conditions of the worker are included in this context. The second point is this excerpt: “allow the adaptation of working conditions to the psychophysiological characteristics of workers”. In other words, according to the standard, working conditions need to adapt to the worker and not the other way around, as many people think.
