Although we must say that initially and when this Authorization for Internships was introduced in the regulations, most students did not pay much attention to it. In the months following the implementation of this authorisation, many people opted to apply for the Authorisation to Search for Employment instead of taking advantage of this Internship Permit. We remind you that both the Residence Authorisation for Internships and the Residence Authorisation for Searching for Employment were introduced into our regulations last year 2018, through an Additional Provision of the well-known Entrepreneurs Law. Over the years and due to the structure of our labour market, the Residence Authorisation for Internships has been gaining importance and many students are now taking advantage of this figure, in order to begin their working life in Spain. For this reason, in this article we want to give you the 5 advantages of this Residence Permit for Internships. 1. IT IS THE BEST WAY TO CHANGE A STUDENT AUTHORIZATION INTO A RESIDENCE AUTHORIZATION Before the introduction of this permit in our legal system, the way to change from a student card to a residence permit was very limited and framed in the law. Until 2018, the most common way to change our student card was using article 199 of Royal Decree 557/2011, of April 20. This route has very strict requirements, including having remained in Spain for at least three years as a student. This requirement requires anyone who wants to access this modification to remain in Spain previously for at least three years with a Stay for Studies, and therefore, with the corresponding extensions for each year. This Authorization is the "easiest" way to change our student card to a residence and work permit. 2. WITH THE INTERNSHIP AUTHORIZATION YOU CAN WORK If you have obtained a higher education qualification in the two years prior to the date of your internship permit application or you are undertaking studies leading to obtaining a higher education qualification in Spain or abroad, you can participate in an internship program by signing an internship agreement or internship work contract in order to improve your knowledge, your practice and your experience in a professional environment. That is to say, with this Internship Residence Authorization you can join the work activity of a company, and thus begin your professional and working life. Unlike what happens, for example, with the Residence Authorization for Job Search, which requires a modification to be made in order to work, with this internship permit you can work directly without having to carry out any additional procedures. 3. THE INTERNSHIP PERMIT CAN BE APPLIED FOR WHILE OUTSIDE OF SPAIN Another of the great advantages of this Residence Permit for Internships is that it can be requested and processed even if the worker is outside of Spain. The intern must have obtained a higher education degree abroad or in Spain in the two years prior to applying for the permit, so it is not mandatory that the training has been carried out in Spain or that the foreigner is in our country. 4.
