Today, bucket wheel excavators are used in the Fortuna opencast mine to exploit the energy reserves of the Rhenish lignite mining area, and the coal is mechanically pressed into briquettes in the factories. We are now the only scientists in Germany to specifically use the medium of film for research and presentation. The approximately 260 film productions that have been made in recent decades are irreplaceable documents of lost knowledge from agriculture, crafts, industrial work and the diverse regional customs. Today we use the medium of film primarily to document current processes of change and to accompany people in the Rhineland in their life contexts. This results in films on intercultural phenomena and problems, on the changing world of work, on new forms of social coexistence and on dealing with rituals, customs and traditions. All film documentaries from the LVR Institute for Regional Studies and Regional History are also available on DVD. The complete film catalog can be found on our homepage under Everyday Culture - Films. ► https://rheinische-landeskunde.lvr.de
